UN to send a mission to Darfur for assessing UNAMID performance PDF Print E-mail

Al-Fasher, (SUNA)-The United Nations said it will dispatch a mission within the coming weeks to Darfur to conduct a comprehensive evaluation for work of the peacekeeping forces of the Joint United Nations -African Union Mission in Darfur(UNAMID) as well as holding deliberation on ways of reducing of Mission forces at request of the Government of Sudan.

Assistant UN Secretary-General for Rule of Law, Mr. Dimtry Titov said the UN and the Government of Sudan share identical views with regard to reducing of the Mission due to financial difficulties the donors are facing.During his meeting with the Acting Wali of North Darfur State, Al-Fatih Abdul-Aziz Abdul-Nabi in the presence of Director UNAMID-North Darfur Sector, Ambassador , Hussein Jibril, Mr. Titov has affirmed UN cooperation with the government authorities for disarming and demobilizing the former fighters besides cooperation in issues pertinent to maintaining of security and landmine and explosives clearing.The UN Chief of Rule of Law called for speeding up efforts for implementing the Doha Document of Peace in Darfur(DDPD) and continuing in talks with armed movements opposing to peace process in Darfur.Mr. Titov commended the cooperation of the Government of Sudan at the Federal and State levels with UNAMID during the past period, announcing that UN is ready to continue cooperation with Sudan in activities related to landmine and explosives clearing in Darfur, DDPD implementation, conduct of reconciliations and disarmament, demobilization and reintegration of the former fighters.The Acting Wali of North Darfur State reaffirmed stability of the security situations allover the State, stressing that the war in Darfur has ended and that the rebel movements were isolated especially after the savage aggressions committed by Justice and Equality Movement(JEM) against some people in the eastern parts of the State.Abdul-Nabi lauded the considerable role being carried out by UNAMID and organizations operating in humanitarian fields in the State, saying the State Government will not block the way before any organization want to deliver humanitarian assistances to people at affected areas whenever it notified the government with its movement.
